What are your licensing terms?

All the music on the site is licensed under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0. Click here for the overview and here for the full terms (or click "the Legal Code (the full license)" link at the foot of the overview page).

Some commercial users may be required to produce licenses in certain circumstances. If a reasonable payment has been made for tracks we will forward specific licences for tracks. Please email us.

The website I’m submitting to won’t accept an Attribution Licence as sufficient clearance. What now?

Some filmmakers’ websites will not accept Attribution Licenses. For example films submitted to the Metacafe Producers Rewards Programme are not eligible if the music has a simple Attribution Licence. See here for their submission conditions.

In this case you can do one of two things:

a) Email us with details of the project (its title, your name and the pieces you want to use) along with evidence that you have linked to us from another site or blog and we will email you a Non-Attribution License for the project for free. This will give sufficient clearance for the Producer Rewards Programme.

b) Send us a small payment and details of your project and we will email you a Non-Attribution Licence.

Does it matter what country I'm in?

No, you can use the music wherever in the world you are. The License terms are for the England and Wales jurisdiction, but this has no bearing on where is it geographically used.

Can I have exclusive use of a track?

Some clients have asked whether they can have exclusive use of a track (i.e. it will no longer be publicly available on this site, or removed from the site for a fixed period). For this we provide tracks buyout terms. In this instance, although Purple Planet Music retains the copyright, you have unlimited use of the track, and can use it in any way. Some producers prefer to have tracks removed from the site so that music they are using for a premium production does not turn up elsewhere, or used in another way that conflicts with their usage.

Please contact us with the name of the track you are interested in using and the period you would like to have exclusive use.
